Winchester Cathedral is a magnificent example of architecture spanning several centuries. The cathedral was begun by the Norman’s in 1079 to replace the Old Saxon Cathedral nearby. The main areas of interest include the views from the Triforium, the painting in the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the grave of Jane Austen who died in the area. Quite simply a visit to Winchester without visiting its breathtaking cathedral is a real crime.
Winchester College is one of the country’s longest running public schools and was founded way back in 1382. Tour highlights include the 14th century gothic chapel with its wood vaulted roof and College Hall that was the original dining hall.
When Wolvesey Castle was built in the 12th century it was one of the country’s largest medieval palaces and the home of the Bishops of Winchester. Sadly it was destroyed during the 1640’s and now lies in ruin but even seeing it in this state it isn’t hard to conjure up a clear image of its former grandeur.
Mills were an essential form of power to Winchester back in the Middle Ages when the first mill was built across the River Itchen. Today you can visit the present mill built back in 1744 that has been restored to retain it in full working order by The National Trust. The Winchester City Mill still provokes a great deal of interest from visitors to the area and there’s a small island garden that is well worth a look too.
Marwell Zoological Park ranges over 100 acres of picturesque parkland and is home to some 1000 animals. There’s a specialist kid’s zoo and attractions such as ‘World of Lemurs’ and ‘Penguin World’. Picnic areas are provided and the miniature railway is certainly a fun way to get around.
